Emerging Artists Award Recipients
We have given out more than 275 grants to emerging artists. Here are quotes from some of our past recipients. Learn more about the Emerging Artist award.
“This grant was truly a seed grant in the sense that it has continued to grow in wonderful and unexpected directions. I used the funds to produce a compact disc to archive the poetry and stories I perform to musical accompaniment. The completed project exceeded my expectations and subsequently won Best Spoken-Word CD at the Boston Poetry Awards in the year 2000.”
“I used the grant to research composition-teaching techniques for young children and to teach a series of experimental lessons to three talented 8–9 year-old children. The results were fantastic! I have continued teaching them composition as part of our regular piano lessons.”
“The grant allowed me to take four-day mini-retreats, where I could temporarily escape family and parenting duties to focus on my writing. I found great support in the knowledge that the Foundation considered my writing worthy of funding. I have been inspired to do my best work.”
“Sustained observation frees me to see more deeply in the passages of light and color; at the same time it allows me to identify the simple notes that structure the image. This work is driven by the tension between the desire to describe subtle nuances of form and the desire to discover just how little information is required to convey the essence of structures.”
“As for many who try to carve out time to make art, my days are a regular struggle to get to a quiet, unperturbed place. The St. Botolph Club Foundation Grant-in-Aid award provided me with the stirring opportunity to do just that: to, in effect, excavate, enlarge and fortify a creative space. Instead of spending the bulk of my energy on student writing, freelance articles and waiting on tables, I’ve been able to turn full attention to fiction writing, more specifically, to the novel I’m revising.”
“Receiving my grant allowed me to travel for two weeks to Lithuania and Latvia. In Lithuania I took part in the National Poetry Festival. I was able to learn about current poetry work in a number of new countries and became interested in the poetic traditions of those countries as well. This creates a much wider circle of creative work and understanding. I remain immensely grateful, and I can say truthfully that my life has been changed by this experience.”
